The Parliaments - Testify! - The Best of the Early Years

The Parliaments were an early doo-wop singing group from Plainfield, New Jersey. They were a quintet formed in the back room of a barbershop comprised of:

* George Clinton
* Stingray Davis
* Fuzzy Haskins
* Calvin Simon
* Grady Thomas

The group was based on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, but quickly created a unique sound, including, most notably, very bizarre lyrics. While Clinton, the leader of the group, made weekly trips to Detroit to produce for such groups as The Pets and Roy Handy, the Parliaments switched labels repeatedly, releasing several EPs, including Poor Willy/Party Boys (APT), Lonely Island/Cry For Flip (Golden World) and Heart Trouble/That Was My Girl (Golden World) without success. In 1967, the Parliaments released I Wanna Testify for Revilot, and song went to #3 R&B and #20 Pop on the Billboard Music Charts. This was followed by a dispute with Revilot in 1968, and Clinton's renaming of the group as Funkadelic (which was more in keeping with the musical direction of the group, funk, and integrated the popular genre of psychedelic music), composed of the backing band for the Parliaments, including Billy Bass Nelson. When Revilot declared bankruptcy, the Parliaments were sold to Atlantic Records, and Clinton abandoned doo-wop to avoid working for Atlantic. Funkadelic, and its soon created sister group, Parliament, soon became the legendary creators of funk.

It's fashionable in certain circles to assert that the release of Sgt Pepper marked the unofficial death, or at least temporary maiming, of rock'n'roll. Clark Faville, in his liner notes, sees it differently:
"Pepper was a wake-up call for bands on every continent," he writes. "This was rock's most magical period, when even the world's most inept garage bands felt that their dreams could merge with reality at any moment, if they applied themselves."
On Pepperisms you'll find 18 examples of bands from some of the globe's furthest flung corners applying themselves to these possibilities, and in some instances exceeding all expectations. Los Macs from Chile, South Africa's Quentin E Klopjaeger, Prudy from Czechoslovakia, and Hong Kong's Teddy Robin & the Playboys all show the effects of Sgt Pepper but succeed in creating original material that is both distinctve and compelling.
Although Pepper as the common ingredient to all, there's still a variety of flavors to be savored: The Twilights' "Stop the World For A Day" is a bright slice of McCartneyesque pop-psych, Los Shakers slip into backward-tape weirdness on "Espero Que Les Guste", and Ellie Pop's "Can't Be Love" could almost be Badfinger. Los Walkers' bendy "98,4" is more Revolver than Pepper, while Jade's "Rest of My Life" has more of an acoustic "White Album" feel, but they all fit together into a seamless, eminently listenable whole.
This a superb package from top to bottom, resplendent in Pepper parody/tribute gatefold sleeve, complete with the lyrics to every song carefully transcribed (and in some cases translated) on the back sleeve. The sound quality is superb and Faville's intelligent liners are the icing on the cake. And best of all, none of the tracks remotely resembles "When I'm 64".

Subtitled "17 A-Go-Go Ultrarities From the 60's Singapore and South-East Asia Underground", this comp fairly smokes in a psychedelic pop haze. Covering standards like "Buttons and Bows", but mostly playing by-the-numbers originals, bands like October Cherries, Rosnah and the Siglap Five, Ronnie Ong, and Naomi & the Boys (playing a great Peter Thomas number) played a mixture of surf, soul, r&b, and plain ole psych pop. A couple of the groups here even went to #1 in their home countries. Fuzz guitar! The tracks featuring girl singers sound just like the Ultra Chicks French girl group comps, thus testifying to the universal appeal the rock music of the day held for young people the world over.
Please don't pm me saying "Why only 17 tracks and not 26 ?".

History of UK Underground Folk Rock - Vol. 1-2

You can think of this as sort of an equivalent to specialty series like Nuggets, Rubble, and Pebbles that unearthed very obscure 1960s rock, the difference being that this focuses on British folk-rock of the late '60s and '70s. Although artists like Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, the Incredible String Band, and Pentangle are fairly popular and well-known, there have been very few discs dedicated to excavation of other bands working along the same lines that never got anywhere (commercially that is). This CD is compiled from rare albums, along with presenting previously unavailable songs by the Trees, Tir Na Nog, Mellow Candle, and Harison. Now, when the Trees and Mellow Candle are by far the most recognizable names on the track listing, you know this is digging deep. Note, however, that unlike many anthologies of obscure genre music -- for whatever genre -- the quality on this and Vol. 2 of this series is pretty high, and virtually guaranteed to appeal to fans of classic British folk-rock in the Fairport/Steeleye/Incredibles mold. Whether high female vocals in the Sandy Denny/Jacqui McShee style or fairly exotic acoustic-based folk-psych is your bag, there's a lot of it here.

The definitive Japanese space rock band, originally called "Far Out". It's pretty safe to say Nipponjin was to Far East Family Band what Photos of Ghosts was to PFM. That meant the band was trying to break in to the international market, which they did by having the album released on Vertigo in Germany. For Nipponjin, they decided to use Klaus Schulze to produce and mix the album and re-record most of it in English. Also, Kitaro, venerable new age artist had his start here.

Originally from Venezuela, where they were known as Los Impala, this group relocated to Madrid, Spain in 1965. After a few months, their singer Henry Stephens left to pursue a solo career, recording an EP as Lord Henry Con Los Impala.
After a few years the band moved to Chicago, releasing their Impala Syndrome album which is well worth checking out. An effective blend of melodic, laid back songs (Love Grows A Flower, Land Of No Time and the superb Eastern-influenced finale, Run (Don't Look Behind)) combined with fuzz guitar numbers like Too Much Time and Let Them Try. New Love Time is also rather catchy but Leave, Eve sounds unashamedly like The Rascals' Its Wonderful.
